Biography

Matt is an active attorney and mediator with Erica Baez Law. He is also an ordained minister. He stands ready to provide legal counsel and guidance on all family law matters. His legal career has spanned over 53 years, and has included over two decades as an Air Force judge advocate, including service as Chief Circuit Military Judge, as a federal prosecutor with the Criminal Division of the U.S. Department of Justice, international legal systems architect in the former Soviet Union, corporate General Counsel, and private law practice in Texas and Virginia.

A graduate of Baylor University School of Law, Matt also is a graduate of the George Washington University National Law Center with a Masters in International and Comparative Law, the Air War College and the National Judicial College. He has had extensive trial experience and is able to analyze complicated legal disputes from the perspective of an experienced trial judge.

In 2011, Matt was ordained as a minister and elder at Redemption Hill Church in Richmond. While no longer active as an elder, he and his wife Mary Lou are involved in ministry to single adults. Matt frequently conducts pre-marital counseling, and he officiates at weddings when requested.

Matt is trained through Ambassadors of Reconciliation in both faith-based conflict coaching and mediation. His primary role with Erica Baez Law is refining and expanding the firm’s mediation services, with a view to helping parties reach agreement on major marital disputes, consider reconciliation when possible, and minimize the expense, delay, and long-term damage to personal relationships, especially children, that often flow from litigating such issues in the courts. He assists the law firm’s team with respect to military divorce cases, and all major aspects of family law.
